A short biography

Philippe Barraud Philippe Barraud, 58, embarked on his media career in the Lausanne studios of photographer and art historian Jacques Dominique Rouiller, where he was introduced to the challenges of black and white photography, and the fascinating world of contemporary art.

In 1972, he took up journalism at the Gazette de Lausanne, a prestigious liberal-conservative daily newspaper founded in 1798, becoming its editor in chief in 1976.

He continued to work for the Journal de Genève, after its merger with the Gazette, concentrating mainly on political writing. In 1987, he joined the weekly magazine L’Hebdo, whose founder, Jacques Pilet, saw Philippe's ideological non-conformism as an ideal opportunity to bring new dynamism to the editorial staff. Philippe has since established himself as a leading science journalist and editor as well as publishing three novels.

In 2000, he created his own political web-magazine, Commentaires.com, a platform dedicated to his crusade against neo-conformism in the media and the political establishment.

His frequently uncompromising stance has become highly popular among his readership, eager for an alternative to the routine outpourings of the mainstream media. To quote the political journal La Nation: “Barraud, liberal, environmentalist and militant anti-racist, refuses to be categorised. You just have to read him, for pleasure, interest - irritation even.”

Philippe is a keen nature enthusiast, hiker and mountaineer, activities that have led him to discover and appreciate some of the remotest regions of the earth.

He is also a astrophotographer (www.cullyobservatory.com). However, his home base remains Cully, Switzerland, a small village among the vineyards overlooking Lake Geneva. He is father to Diane, 31, a theologian and Emmanuel, 29, a journalist.
